Healthy heart cells vs SARS-CoV-2 infected heart cells. We looked deeper into how COVID-19 wreaks havoc in the heart. Could help explain why so many people have lasting heart defects even after recovery. #cardiovid #SARScomeres biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

Initially #SARSCoV2 was considered a respiratory virus. New Gladstone Institutes findings in both iPSC-> heart cells & autopsy indicate it's a heart virus, w/ a distinct pattern: —myofibrillar fragmentation —loss of nuclear DNA —"complete dissolution of the contractile machinery" 1/

🚨I wrote about what COVID-19 does to the heart, the controversy around the emerging science, and how it ties into this key lesson that I've talked about before: "As pandemics get wider, they feel weirder." theatlantic.com/health/archive…

Our research on #SARSCoV2 infection in the heart was featured in The Wall Street Journal! Catch @ToddMcDevitt talking about our work and the impact of #COVID19 in the heart. Great reporting by Sarah Toy!

I'm probably late to the game but this Nature Communications made me realize #SARSCoV2 virus in blood is quite common (27% hospitalized patients, 13% outpatients), setting up a clear route of infection of other organs. nature.com/articles/s4146…

Beautiful work leveraging the combination of iPS-CM, monocyte culture and hamster models to study #SARSCoV2 infection in the heart. Congratulations Benjamin tenOever Shuibing Chen and team! Looks like you didn't find virus stain in human autopsies. What do you make of this?

How can #COVID19 damage the heart? Using #iPSC-derived cells + patient samples, Gladstone Institutes scientists discovered #SARSCoV2 disrupts structural genes + morphology of infected heart muscle cells. @ToddMcDevitt Juan A Perez-Bermejo Science Translational Medicine stm.sciencemag.org/lookup/doi/10.…
