To the Christian, the Jew is a stubborn fellow who, in a redeemed world, is still waiting for the Messiah. To the Jew, the Christian is a heedless fellow who, in an unredeemed world, affirms that redemption has somehow or other taken place. - Martin Buber

20 years ago I might have said that Romans, John, or Revelation was the most important biblical book (like any good Evangelical would, right?!). Though I'm still a Gentile, I'm now fully convinced: if you miss Deuteronomy and the covenant, you miss the entire Biblical narrative.

This episode is perhaps one of our most important ones. Until "covenantal maintenance" (just our own term, not a scriptural one) made sense, the Bible was mostly a jumbled collection of words, followed by Jesus and the cross, followed by Paul, followed by even more jumbled words.

Jesus' life, death, and resurrection is not a "fulfillment" or "radical redefinition" of the hope of Israel, but is understood by Paul and the apostles as exemplary, showing the pattern that the nation of Israel has followed in the past and will follow in the future.

"Israel reveals the hearts of men, and Jerusalem will sift the nations." The controversy surrounding the Jewish people and the land of Israel is not new, and it's not over. But the end is certain. The nations will one day flow to Jerusalem to learn the ways of Israel's God.

This is the verdict: The Light has come into the world and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil. Why do so many hate Israel and the Jewish people with such an irrational, obsessive hatred? Because they love darkness and hate the Light. It's

One day, Gentiles will find a Jew and say "take us to your God!" (Zech 8:23) And one day, Jews will joyfully serve the nations with the knowledge of God as a kingdom of priests. (Ex 19:6) Israel's God will serve both Jew and Gentile a large helping of humble pie beforehand.
