Of all the things happening with the coming election, the thing I am most excited about is taking my daughter to vote for the first time.

Just finished a 50 mile ride with my son to finish off his cycling merit badge. It was a glorious day, sunny and in the 60's. Our legs are shot and we're starving, but it's been a blast getting to do this with him.

Watching The Great Hack this week with my writing and design students as a way to talk about algorithmic culture, psychographing, and how micro-targeting influence culture and ideology.

As we approach yet another volatile election day, I remain grateful that I had professors in graduate school that helped me see that sometimes you absolutely set aside the syllabus and make space for students to process their thoughts and feelings about complicated, messy things.

Election Day should be a national holiday. Pass it on.

There are few things I hate more than the election night gamification of calling results in states before all votes are counted. It's absolutely about manipulation and mobilization and I loathe it.

We'll take the wins where we can get them.

I volunteered to make a lasagna for a potluck event. One of the participants asked me to "use the good cottage cheese." I'm sorry, the what? Who the fuck is putting cottage cheese in their lasagna?

Asked my students this morning why they didn't do any of the readings this week. Their answer: "It's boring and we don't care." At least they were honest.

One of the best things about my daughter attending my university is that I occasionally get to have lunch with her.

Reading analysis papers from my game design students who are looking critically at information economies, and how easy those are to manipulate. Related, they are also realizing how easy it can be for those systems to be employed manipulate players.

Did our annual tradition of going book shopping on Christmas Eve and getting a book for everyone. Now to settle in with some good tea, and a new William Gibson novel!

Hosting the holidays this year. 25lbs of pulled pork, 15lbs of garlic-parmesan mashed potatoes, and bacon-roasted green beans. Assorted pies for desert. Gonna put everyone to sleep with a food coma before they even get to open presents.

I am currently more potato than human.

Holiday breaks mean a chance to catch up on all the work I can't do during the regular semester. Today I'm finishing the bathroom remodel. Got the new shower installed and drywall placed/textured. Now to paint and install the new fixtures.

All those constitutional literalists about the second amendment of the last 20+ years have suddenly become highly invested in post-structural semantics when it comes to due process.
