Magnetic resonance scientist and engineer. The more difficult the problem, the more fun it is to solve.

Here is a thing I did. It’s part of a science digest meant for a general audience, who may or may not have technical background, but probably hasn’t been introduced to EPR before. I am grateful to TDA Research for supporting this financially so it’s free to the reader.

Coffee and EDM are the main contributors to me staying vertical some days. Also humor, like imagining all my meetings, proposals, reports and technical directing encompassed by this busy little briefcase carrying penguin.

EPR fans, you have the opportunity to help the RMC EPR committee by nominating speakers (self-nomination welcome). Special emphasis on pre-tenure faculty who could benefit from an international EPR platform! Nominate away here: forms.gle/bpBtzoAd6xovGR…

A PhD is many things, but chiefly it’s handing you the keys to craft your work/life/family balance exactly as you want it. You can choose to work on intellectually stimulating problems in either academia or industry, and there are great scientists in each area.

I always think “one day I’ll be able to tell people it gets better”, but no, taking critique from grant reviews never gets easier. It’s absolutely essential to hear real feedback on your work, but never easy. Maybe fun if I made a drinking game of it? 🤔

Working on a proposal. “Where is my mind?” by Trampled by Turtles comes on. I laugh out loud. That’s a good question. It still seems to be functioning remotely, where ever it is, but it’s also very tired. Maybe this night is the genesis of my evil scientist laugh?

Every new EPR scientist, upon leaving their program, should be adept at using “Old Faithful” - CW EPR. Especially now that there are many good options in the benchtop space. CW-EPR can be the new frontier for EPR evangelization. :)

One of the engineers on the team I lead gave this to me. It’s fitting, as I love coffee and am constantly talking about invisible static magnetic or oscillating electromagnetic fields. The “force” is real, and it’s magnetism :)
