The restoration of New Bedford’s iconic Whaleman’s Statue is underway. They had to wait for a series of hot and hot days to seal it up, and now we have them.

On August 20, 1925, one hundred years ago today, the last whaling vessel to return to port with oil, the John R. Manta, sailed into New Bedford with a load of 300 barrels, marking the end of the traditional high seas whaling industry in the United States.

Today New Bedford officially joined the ranks of #PurpleHeart Cities. When we see these signs, we’d do well to remember that real people, like these recipients from New Bedford, made profound sacrifices for our country.

The #CapeVerde islands recently experienced mudslides that destroyed thousands of homes. The Cape Verdean Association of New Bedford, the Verdean Vets, and others organized a relief effort today that blew away expectations. I’m proud to live in a city with so much generosity.

Congrats to Tonix Pharmaceuticals, which was granted FDA approval for Tonmya, a breakthrough drug for fibromyalgia. It’s great news for those suffering from the disease and the employees who work at Tonix’s facility in the NB Business Park. ir.tonixpharma.com/news-events/pr…

On Labor Day, we pause to reflect on the enduring contributions workers have made to American prosperity. It is also a day to recommit to wages that represent a fair share of that prosperity, safe workplaces, and respect for the dignity of a hard day’s work.

On a sunny morning much like the one 24 years ago, we remembered with a moment of silence today those who were lost on 9/11, and we paid tribute to those who ran toward the danger, on that day and the years that followed.

I’m proud to have joined other mayors in signing a declaration that reaffirms our commitment to respecting the views of people we don’t agree with — and to look for opportunities to turn down the temperature of our civic discourse.

The point Rico the Green Aracari was making to me is that the @buttonwoodparkzoo’s new Animal Ambassador Pavilion, which opens to the public Saturday, will be one of the best animal engagement exhibits anywhere. Congrats to everyone who played a role in making it happen.

Ever wonder who makes the label on a beer bottle? Name Plates for Industry in New Bedford does, and they make labels for products as far flung as medical devices and fighter jets. Congrats to NFI and its nearly 200 employees on the company’s 50th anniversary.

Today the New Bedford Ocean Cluster hosted seventeen state legislators from Georgia to Maine (and one from Oregon) who are members of the National Caucus of Environmental Legislators, to discuss #NewBedford’s national leadership in maritime industries.

The Army Corps has informed the #NewBedford Port Authority that on account of this weekend’s coastal storm, it will likely close the New Bedford Hurricane Barrier at the overnight high tide, that is, at about 1:30 AM. Mariners have been alerted on various channels.

We’re removing the barriers to housing development so more units can come on the market, putting downward pressure on rental prices.

This regulatory proposal may seem to be in-the-weeds, but it would represent a major shift in commercial fishing policy. Scalloping is the number one fishery in the US, and this change would help the industry contend with growing foreign competition.

The pause is unnecessary and entirely performative. Delaying the project will only make it more expensive in the long run to replace the bridges.
