Great occasion for my 1st tweet! Proud contributor to this nature perspective on the ongoing debate questioning a fetal #microbiome. With 46 experts in #microbiome #science and related disciplines, we assess the evidence. The answer, an unambiguous ‘No’ bit.ly/3XF4ePg

👉Important message: a striking lack of correlation between #pathway abundance🦠and plasma #metabolite levels🩸(cohort, n=1055), emphasising that gene abundances in gut metagenomes are not (on their own) a useful predictor of plasma metabolic outputs. nature.com/articles/s4158…

📄 This paper from UI Stead Family Department of Pediatrics not only outlines their hemodynamic screening approach to PDA in infants ≤ 26 wks but also reports how that strategy reduced rates of death or severe #BPD by 50% and improved survival free of severe morbidities to 73% in 22-23 wks infants!

Pretty good math. I had come up with 400 deaths annually. That now makes 2 deaths due to probiotics over a decade? It’s also not just mortality. Surgical NEC has significant impact on NDI. Evidence would suggest as bad as grade IV IVH

Another trial showing no benefit of early treatment of a PDA Selection, definition, etc. … yes, know the arguments that will come … but at some point shouldn’t trial evidence >> physiologic rationale (without evidence of benefit on outcomes) nejm.org/doi/full/10.10… #neoEBM

Thrilled to share our team’s Nature Communications paper on the 1st inhaled live biotherapeutics for chronic lung disease! Years of hard work & bold thinking led us to engineer “air as medicine.” Proud to see this work moving forward at Alveolus Bio with phase 1b trials soon! UAB Heersink School of Medicine

Collecting #omics data is expensive, but #EHR data is available for large patient cohorts for free! In our latest Nature Machine Intelligence paper, we show how deep learning + EHR data can supercharge omics models. Hard work by (soon to be Dr.) Samson Mataraso: nature.com/articles/s4225…
