This National Parks and Wildlife Service funded desk-based study builds on previous work on ancient woodlands by BEC Consultants. In the report, we review the current conservation and protection status of known ancient and long-established woodlands in Ireland.

We also review palaeoecological studies of woodlands in Ireland and assess the use of palaeoecological data for determining woodland ancientness. Maynooth Biology Maynooth Geography

A case study of Leitrim and Kilkenny used 1830s OS maps & older archival information to identify 120 ancient woodlands, far more sites than previously documented. Many small fragments of ancient woodland in the Irish landscape, but most are threatened and are lacking protection
