Great early activity in any secondary classroom: have kids independently finish the sentence “Getting an A means…” Then call on each student in the room to share out their answer one at a time while you record:

I used to just add "classroom values" to posters, mention them Week 1, and then basically ignore them as a teacher. They weren't a part of what we did. Now? We spend way more time with them early on—including a paired analogy + having students reflect/discuss frequently:

As we get started on a new year it's so cool to see what everyone I've met through spaces like this is up to. Teaching is an island; so when I see people like Adrian valuing what I do - starting with trust, platforming identity, and throwing in an engaging poem to get started.

It seems simple, but I think that there is immense value in people teaching a subject they love and feel purposeful about. It is really difficult to be a great teacher of something you don't personally enjoy, right?

When you light up, they light up. Knowledge without passion = distrust. We teach what we do for a reason.

Teaching can be complicated but at its core it’s simple. Here are three reminders if I were new, and they all surround taking our best intentions and applying them with intentionality. Do these and you end up modeling the same values you’re trying to create. #BackToSchool
