My two NIH cancer research grants were terminated today. One involving breast cancer prevention is an “outstanding investigator award” and had received a perfect score by reviewers. How does ending lifesaving cancer research make Americans healthier? Harvard Medical School @aacr

The NIH has proposed making all Institute Directors political appointees which would inject politics into scientific decisions & bring instability to scientific leadership. Please object by clicking on the green “public comment” button at the top: federalregister.gov/documents/20... .

The NIH notified me yesterday that there is currently no policy that supports applying for a R00 that is associated with a terminated K99. So now, both the postdoc K99 (Harvard, $250k) and the R00 (non-Harvard institution TBD, $750) are BOTH effectively terminated.

If you're an international PhD student at Harvard working on something that my lab is familiar with and you're at risk of deportation, shoot me an email. We may be able to host you or find someone else who can.

“One of the biggest tragedies I've observed in my professional life.” David R. Liu, winner of the Breakthrough in Life Sciences and professor at the Broad Institute and Harvard University, describes the cost of government cuts to science research at universities. Walter Isaacson

Excited to share our latest preprint! We used cryoEM and MD simulations to look at the GTP-induced activation of the mu-opioid receptor-Gi complex with partial, full, & super agonists resolving Gi activation and how its modulated by different ligands! biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

A Puerto Rican Ph.D. student. A first-gen scientist. Both lost NIH grants under vague “new priorities.” Nearly 2,500 projects and $1.6B in cut or stalled grants. No vote. No debate. Just science erased. nytimes.com/interactive/20…

Sometimes this job can feel like a lot. But sometimes it’s the best job you could imagine. Your whole lab tells you they want to come in on Saturday to finish an experiment and you get to see the look of amazement on your tech’s face when their first negative stain works.

Setting up a lab has been no joke. Today, I'm stoked to have one more piece of my postdoc work out in the wild. Several more manuscripts to go, and I don't have a lot of time for a tweetorial today, but enjoy and happy to get any feedback on this story. biorxiv.org/content/10.110…

We can unequivocally oppose attacks on science and all that they stand for, and still talk honestly about what we can do better to maximize the value of science to society.

It should be an absolute requirement of all NIH grants that all journals reviews - including/especially when they lead to rejection - should be made publicly available.
