My remodeled classroom no longer has a space to store long items like meter sticks and support poles. Looking for ideas - I'm ready to build something if necessary. #ITeachPhysics

Jill from Champaign, IL. Flipping AP Physics for about 8 yrs and just decided to flip on-track physics this year. WooHoo! I love the initial planning, looking for a new way to do things, reflecting on what worked and what needs to change. #flipclasschat

Jill from Champaign, IL. I teach physics, so mostly juniors and seniors. Probably just a simple 😊 or 😜. But I love communicating with my Mom with emojis. #Grade4EqChat

A1. Our scale is traditional --90, 80, 70, 60-- but when I try to find ways to use a non-numerical scale at times (mastery quizzes in AP) The book makes me want to change more but it's tough to get everyone on board who I work with & to manage w/an online gradebook. #Grade4EqChat

A1. Good questions. I haven't communicated this clearly recently & we've had a lot of admin turnover. Think I'll send an email or catch them in the halls, to explain what we do. After last year, I think more people will "get it" in terms of learning from vids. #flipclasschat

A2. Psychologically. I want kids to want to catch up, and I naturally think they will freak out about a zero and do something. But it definitely doesn't work with the kids I'm most trying to reach. #Grade4EqChat

A2. The reason we are flipping the on-track physics class is that we tried it last year out of desperation and it worked. My colleague (bio teacher teaching physics) suggested we keep at it, and might use it some for his bio classes too. #flipclasschat

A4. I'm definitely not shy about sharing what I'm doing with my colleagues, trying to help people see other ways of teaching & learning. #flipclasschat

A4. The description of the research over 7 years, where the switch to "minimum grading" did NOT give a free pass or lead to inflated grades was a key section. I feel more confident implementing this. #Grade4EqChat

A4. I skipped around a bit in the book, and so I haven't read the next chapter completely. I'm good with continuing in order. #Grade4EqChat

LEADERS!! When we let THE TOUGH THINGS that happened yesterday preclude us from seeing THE GREAT THINGS that happen today we get FURTHER from the REASON WE LOVE THE JOB and CLOSER to the REASON WE DON’T. #LeadFromWhereYouAre #1minwalk2work #ImpactTheNarrative #HackingLeadership

#gradingforequitychat W1Q1 I’m often the only T in a course or I’m dragging bio or chem Ts into physics so I can adjust aspects of grading. Used to not count practice (hw) at all but forced to change with Covid remote. Kept it to less than 10% when included.

Jill McLean (@jillmclean27) 's Twitter Profile Photo

#gradingforequitychat W1Q1 In larger courses we use PLCs to set grading but like the book says, doesn’t mean everyone does the little things the same (accepting late work, how much based on correct vs complete, what is included in formative)

Jill McLean (@jillmclean27) 's Twitter Profile Photo

GradingForEquityChat W1Q2 Our school reports grade traditionally, so no matter what I do, I eventually need a percentage. Ss and Ps expect frequent updates to online grades so waiting until there's enough info to report can be tough. Need consistency within PLCs.

#GradingForEquityChat W2Q1 Though on the surface our district is stepping back from tracked classes, AP options still provide different levels for some courses. Definitely using letter grades but I've never seen a normal curve used but I think many teachers believe it's true.

#GradingForEquityChat I don't have a good answer to the current question, but thought I would share this article that leads into some coming discussions. edutopia.org/article/case-a… It's the best explanation I've seen to explain the effects of a zero when averaging.
