Penal substitution can be articulated crudely (e.g., in a way that divides the Trinity). But in essence, it is a biblical, ancient, and Trinitarian way to understanding the atonement. Further, it can be integrated with other models--and even shed light on them.

The cross is a multidimensional achievement. Christ died to forgive sin, defeat evil, cleanse shame, offer an example, etc. Substitution is not another dimension of the atonement but rather undergirds all the dimensions of the atonement.

All right, just because I’ve been doing this, Jeremy Treat wrote the best little book in introducing the doctrine of the atonement and highlighting and mapping out its multidimensional effects and efficacy. It’s also short, clear, and preaches.

The key to happiness is not gaining what you don’t have (wealth, fame, etc.) but rejoicing in what you already have (life, relationships, etc.) as gifts from God.

I have four kids (ages 11-15) and NONE OF THEM HAVE PHONES. I’m not saying that to judge anyone or tell you what to do, but just to let you know that it’s possible. And it’s been really good for us.

Acts 8 came alive tonight. After preaching on Philip baptizing the Ethiopian, I baptized an Ethiopian woman. It’s the same God, same story, same power, and lives are still being changed!

The pause on SNAP benefits is an opportunity for the church to be the church. Thanks to so many volunteers, we served over 300 meals today (like every day) at the Hope Center. It’s a tangible expression of God’s love for the poor.

Building your own identity is not a gift that sets you free; it’s a burden you were never meant to bear. God gives and defines our identity by grace.
