A Dascylus being cleaned by a juvenile cleaner wrasse. Note how thoroughly the wrasse inspects all parts of the Dasylus' body. The wrasse removes parasites and skin infections, and gains meals from these pests.

The "Large-toothed Conger" (Bathyuroconger vicinus) passes through a leptocephalus stage - as all known true eels do. In this stage, the larval eel is flattened like a penny and is translucent.

This is the larva of an acorn worm, it's called a tornaria larva. I think it could be a sculpture. Like sea cucumber larvae it has a peripheral band of cilia to generate swimming and feeding currents. ZEISS Microscopy

An unusual oasis from #DiagnosingDeepCoral! Despite simple body plans, sponges play complex roles in the ecosystems they inhabit. These filter feeders cannot move and provide a sanctuary for smaller critters. How many different animals are taking refuge here?

Acantharia are blooming. Appearing at least 1 month early and likely, a sign of unusually warm water. Favourites of mine, their spines are strontium sulfate and their single-celled body contains golden symbiotic algae. Can 40s ever be too much of these beauties? ZEISS Microscopy

I’ve finally had time to get to the photos from my Aliens Collection dive on 1May2024 in FL. So here’s a collage of the shots that didn’t make the cut & won’t stand on their own. Have fun zooming in!
