Barney Bigard was born on this day in New Orleans, LA. He went on to play clarinet and tenor sax with King Oliver, Louis Armstrong, and Duke Ellington. Bigard was an integral part of Ellington’s band for 15 years and co-wrote “Mood Indigo” with Duke.

Happy Birthday Jan Garbarek! Norway’s Jazz Ambassador. He has recorded over 30 records as a leader, and numerous recordings with jazz luminaries Keith Jarrett, Charlie Haden, and Gary Peacock. His sound is influenced by Norwegian folk melodies and is a hallmark of the ECM label.
