The White Plume Moth (Pterophorus pentadactyla) is nature's 'Kirigami' artist. Kirigami is the #art of folding and cutting paper to create shapes & patterns. Hedge bindweed is the moth’s larval food and if they feed on a bud, the flower will open to reveal their artwork! #nature

I haven’t been near any wetlands this week, so here’s a common plant that I’m enjoying right now, across hedgerows in #Gloucestershire. Bindweed (with some tiny black beetles). #wildflowerhour wildflowerhour

A fringed water lily for #wildflowerhour. Not a lily at all, it seems, but a member of the bogbean family. As well as distinctive, jagged-edged petals, it has rather unusual, long, angled anthers. Each flower lasts only about 24 hours #pond #cotswolds wildflowerhour

#TuesdayTransformation Wondering where all the male mallards have gone? They're still there... just in camouflage! Every breeding season is finished by what we call the "eclipse" moult. 👇

Bird’s-foot trefoil for #wildflowerhour. A headache of apostrophes and hyphens for editors. Maybe just call it eggs and bacon? Or is it ham and eggs, hen and chickens, lady’s fingers, granny’s toenails… Seen WWT Slimbridge last week wildflowerhour

For years I’ve been searching for Fiona pinnata, a rare pelagic nudibranch originating in the tropics of the Sargasso Sea living amongst goose barnacles. On Tue I found five + dozens of egg masses! This is the first record for Scilly, with possibly less than 10 British records 🙌

Lots of great nature photography to look forward to in October, not least the Wildlife Photographer of the Year awards, presided over by Hope, the blue whale. See natureview.substack.com

I’ve been taking a different kind of picture this week, sparked by my talented friend Rob Collins. natureview.substack.com/p/robs-view
