Coaching isn’t about forcing effort—it’s about fueling belief. Coaching isn’t about commands; it’s about connection. Light a fire within, not beneath, and watch your team rise. Great coaches don’t just build players—they build leaders.

The problem with HS football is simple. Most coaches don’t understand adolescent development. How can you develop somebody when you don’t understand how they develop? Then you factor in race/ethnicity and cultural differences.

Give me a 7-3 coach who respects the game, other coaches and their programs, plays the kids who have worked and dreamed for playing for their hometown, and develops what he has walking his hallways over a 15-0 thief any day of the week and twice on Friday night!

Huge myth: If you didn’t play at a high level, you can’t coach/teach the game OR if you did play at a high level, then you can coach/teach the game. Neither of these is true. Coaching & teaching the game have absolutely nothing to do with how good your were or where you played!

I don’t know how coaches are supposed to be role models when we as a profession do the same things we punish the kids for 🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️🤦🏻‍♂️

Extra-Curricular activities are the Number 1 drop out prevention tool we have. Extracurricular activities save children lives, keep them out of trouble with the law, and usually excel in school.

“A shepherd should smell like his sheep.” Bad leaders lose touch with what it’s like at the front. There are so many implications in that quote if you meditate on it.

HS Football regular season=10 weeks HS Basketball regular season=12 weeks HS Baseball/softball regular season=8 weeks Total=30 weeks (58% of the year) Regular season only HS summer break=9 weeks (17% of the year) In-season training is non-negotiable if you want to develop.

The longer I coach, the more I realize it’s not about the SYSTEM. Sure, the scheme must be sound. But your success depends much more on how well you’re able to TEACH the plays and techniques to your players. Make it simple. Then watch your players fly around the field.

𝐈𝐚𝐧 𝐓𝐚𝐭𝐮𝐦 🏈 For the folks that are hellbent to run a "call"- yes. For folks that cool with the S making the calls on the field to get in the best position for success- no.

I’ve been telling linebackers since the early 2010’s to STOP RUNNING INTO OFFENSIVE LINEMEN. Thats what they want, don’t do their job for them. Run past them, you’re more athletic, that’s why you play linebacker!
