Ringed these male + female Blackcaps in the garden this afternoon. Both unringed - there’s been a ringed one skulking about the garden recently but it’s yet to find its way into the net. Would be interesting to see where that’s from

Absolutely superb find by Gareth - first for Oxon! By pure unfathomable luck, I happened to be at nearby Appleford and made it in time before dusk - watched it for 5-10 mins before dark! Went back for more this morning but views were even more brief than yesterday! Dream find

Did an all-dayer at Otmoor today - hit 70 species. Failed to refind the Dotterel, LSW or Jack Snipe but did have the ringtail Hen Harrier on the deck, 2 Woodcock, Ruff, Dunlin, 2 Brambling, 2 Stonechat, 2 Chiffchaff etc. Lots of showy Snipe almost made up for no Jack…

Very pleased to have made it to 365 consecutive days of eBird checklists! Made the switch from Birdtrack 1.5 years ago. Becoming dangerous now - letting it go would be very difficult…

Found a 3rd Garganey at Otmoor this evening, with 2 males and 1 female on Big Otmoor. Will be interesting to see if the lone male hangs around

Nice to show @LONYouthBirders around Otmoor today - 65 species including Garganey, 14 Ruff and first Ringed Plover of the year. Highlight was this White Stork colour ringed GB1J from the White Stork Project reintroduction scheme. Not tickable but still #onmyotmoorlist

Very pleased to find this spoonbill at Otmoor this morning - initially seen heading south over the first screen then settled briefly on Big Otmoor. My 200th Oxon tick. With @Ben_Sheldon_EGI @WillLangdon12 George Rabin

This morning we recorded the return of a male Cuckoo to one of our farms. We first ringed him at a site 2km downstream in June 2020 and last year we caught him at a site 4km upstream. Each year he returns to the same stretch of the Thames from wintering grounds in central Africa

Have struggled to get out birding so far this year with this evening remarkably only my 5th visit to Otmoor this year. Good to see the Marsh Harriers have bred successfully once again with at least 4 juveniles present

Been a bit hot to do any birding so far in Turkey, so nice to have this (male?) Short-toed Eagle over the house this afternoon

Our farmland bird ringing surveys can often highlight rarer species using lowland sites, like this Wryneck, an amazing member of the woodpecker family, on its migration from mainland Europe to wintering grounds in West Africa, and recorded yesterday on a farm near the Thames.

Most Meadow Pipits migrate south from the UK later in the autumn, with peak migration arriving in the coming weeks. Today we caught an impressive 157 Meadow Pipits in a stewardship bird cover strip, plus other migrants including 4 Stonechats, a Whinchat and a Grasshopper Warbler.
