Today, 600 Rohingya refugees were herded onto a Bangladesh Navy vessel & relocated to Bhasan Char. Upon landing, they were loaded onto tractors like cargo & transported to Cluster 113, which will now be their designated “home” on what observers have aptly condemned as a prison

Because they enable other people to exploit undocumented people and their kids and families. Domestic abusers, employers, bullies at school, cops, etc. Merely *accusing* someone of something now gets them detained indefinitely no matter what.

Father François Ponchaud passed away today. He rang the bell about the Khmer Rouge exactions in his book ‘Cambodge Année Zéro’, published in 1977. I was privileged to photograph him working in his beloved Cambodia: johnvink.photoshelter.com/gallery/Cambod…

Really quite emblematic of the disparity of wealth and desperation of people right now in Cambodia. Tycoons like Sok Kong project that people are doing well and the country is developing, while their handouts leads to people dying in a crowd crush for a little extra income.

"I will never send my child far away from me. The pain of separation is something that lingers in your soul, until the moment you can be finally reunited." Incredibly moving piece from my colleague Lobsang G. Bodhaa འབོ་མདའ། on being smuggled out of Tibet as a child rfa.org/english/tibet/…

It's very disturbing to see the situation devolve to the point where journalists are denied entry for unclear reasons. I hope this will change. news.mongabay.com/2025/02/cambod…

My latest for VOA and some unfortunate news for press freedom in Cambodia, and SE Asia tonight as Gerry Flynn tells his story on his ban from Cambodia. Phil Robertson CPJ Asia comment as British environmental journalist denied entry to Cambodia voanews.com/a/british-envi… #pressfreedom

Just want to add my voice to the chorus pronouncing Gerry's expulsion from Cambodia a real shame and a genuine loss to the country's much-needed environmental journalism. Hopefully the government reverses this embarrassing decision soon and Gerry can get back to work!

It’s been a very tumultuous 24 hours but the most harrowing thing is that many of my colleagues at Radio Free Asia who risk their lives and have sat in prison for daring to report on authoritarian regimes are at grave risk. Please raise awareness: rfa.org/english/china/…

As the Trump administration works to dismantle VOA, RFE/RL and RFA, I'm thinking about our 10 journalists who are imprisoned around the world for doing their jobs. Journalism is not a crime. Here’s a thread on their cases.

A couple of words about Israel's assassination of the top broadcast journalist in Gaza, Anas al-Sharif. 1. Israel has now stopped pretending journos are "collateral damage," or hastily smearing them after a kill. This murder is claimed loudly and proudly by IDF spox.

Beyond thrilled that a story I edited last year by the incomparable Abby Seiff and colleagues in the RFA Burmese service has just won the Edward R Murrow Award for Excellence in Diversity, Equity and Inclusion: rfa.org/english/specia…
