The #FalklandIslands are considered a hotspot for highly endangered sei whales. A study has now found a possible explanation thanks to the alien-like songs of the #animals. #Antarctica #news #whales #protection Falklands Conservation polarjournal.ch/en/2022/11/10/… via @JournalPolar

NEWS: Our #whale team, in collaboration with @AfricanAquatic, has documented for the first time ever breeding songs of the #Endangered Sei whale, here in the #Falklands! This is just further proof of the importance of the Falklands as a Sei whale hotspot. Well done to Caroline! x.com/FI_Conservatio…

Today was the last day of our whale ship strike workshop. Congrats to Rui Prieto for organizing it, together with the rest of the OCEAN project team. I learnt a lot about the topic, and there's still so much more we don't know. It will be interesting to see the topic evolve.

Fully-funded PhD opportunity in the Azores “Distribution modelling of oceanic megafauna towards dynamic oceanic management”. Please RT! Applications are due March 15, 2023. Full details available here: aircentre.org/Scholarship/ad… and [email protected]

This PhD project will develop and test a modelling framework to predict distribution and density hotspots for key megafauna species and probability of risk from human activities in near real-time. The PhD will be working with the Azores Whale Lab - Cetacean Ecology Group, Elliott Hazen, and the COSTA project

Last week Tiago André Marques and Ana Širović were in Faial, at a workshop for the OCEAN project ocean-navigation-awareness.eu organized by Rui Prieto on the problem of whale ship-strikes. Learned lots. Looking forward to see how PAM can help to find solutions to a difficult problem!

Last Wednesday, Rui Prieto participated in the Whale Strike Webinar held under the Nautical Institute seminars series. The recording is now available for everyone: youtube.com/watch?v=UPFhG3…
