Remember watching in Canberra the results of the last referendum on an Australian Republic in 1999 during a wonderful party hosted by Prof Peter Dennis after the 'The Boer War: Army, Nation and Empire’ conference. 👋 Ian van der Waag canberratimes.com.au/story/7762506/…

An interesting parallel to the initial invasion of Ukraine is the Austro-Hungarian invasion of Serbia in 1914. An under-resourced force goes to war with an experienced adversary and suffers a serious defeat on the defendant's pre-war training grounds.

Steph Hinnershitz traveled a rough road to the Nat'l WWII museum. Being a first gen. college student, academic job cuts, and geographic separation from an academic spouse are all part of this great story! National WWII Museum SMH Historians Penn Press spotifyanchor-web.app.link/e/Y8QJJ4oPpub

My friend in South Africa told me they've become used to power outages for maybe 5 hours at a time — which is what Kyiv, on a good day, is dealing with. Why is a country not at war going through these outages for years? Corruption has to be the answer.

The most incredible book about the 8th Army's negligence of rear base area logistics, written in 1966 by someone there in Cairo and Tunisia. It has it all - organised crime, senior level corruption, gross incompetence, sexual favours, deserters living in gin palaces....blimey.
