I agree Daniel Finkelstein that ministers are right to ask staff back to the office, but there are good and bad ways to do so no matter who is asking. The office must be made more appealing than wfh to attract people back voluntarily. Right now it isn’t. thetimes.co.uk/article/a64df7…

Looking forward to the increased learning and development offer for civil servants mentioned on Today with this new government efficiency drive. 🤔

🧵 Something seriously odd is afoot in natural gas markets. There's a BIG glut of gas in the UK. Wholesale gas prices are the lowest in 18 months. There is so much gas no-one is quite sure what to do with it Yet far from falling, household gas bills are heading even higher. 👇

Pleased to say the Boiler Upgrade Scheme finally launches today! If you're in the market for a heat pump check out the gov.uk page and find a local MCS certified installer who can apply for a grant on your behalf gov.uk/guidance/check…

Really interesting report. Subsidies + interest-free loans look like the way to drive up heat pump adoption. We have one (the Boiler Upgrade Scheme £5000 grant) but not the other.

BIG NEWS! (not big news): Statistics for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme will be published on 25 August. Find it funny these things have to be pre-announced but government works in mysterious ways! gov.uk/government/sta…

“‘Net zero’ groupthink got us into this mess” article in which author doesn’t actually explain how the “too aggressive race to net zero” has led to high bills. 🤔 More gas storage, as he suggests, isn’t the answer. thetimes.co.uk/article/8574cb…

The latest stats for the Boiler Upgrade Scheme were published this morning. 96% of applications were for ASHPs and the mean cost of these was £12,922 (£7,922 after £5,000 grant) and mean capacity was 10.7 kW. 51% of ASHPs replaced gas systems. gov.uk/government/sta…

There are many good arguments for why landlords need to not be over-regulated, but increasing energy performance requirements so landlords to make their properties better for their tenants isn’t one of them. You may not like landlords but we need them. thetimes.co.uk/article/3906d8…

Surely there’s a better/healthier solution to burning wood on these narrow boats? Can’t we get water source heat pumps attached to the side?

Wood burning stoves are expensive to buy and run, bad for your and your neighbour’s health, and not very green. But they do provide great comfort and warmth. Life enhancing and damaging at the same time. thetimes.co.uk/article/4a6491…

BEIS is dead. Long live The Department for Energy Security and Net Zero! At least it's a bit more obvious what the department does from its name

Ian Napier (@ianapier) 's Twitter Profile Photo

Informative on the effects of wood burners. But slightly unfair on the UK’s support for heat pumps I thought. Can get £5000 grant from the Boiler Upgrade Scheme and more like £7500 from equivalent Scottish scheme. All support looks worse than Italy’s super bonus
