at the very core of the so-called word gap is a raciolinguistic ideology which frames the language practices of marginalised communities as lacking. it is a victim blaming, deficit-based concept which simply diverts attention away from structural and systemic inequalities.

Don’t get me started on “standard English”. Ian Cushing and Julia Snell are quite rightly calling out this linguistic bullying.

since its inception in 1839 through to its current existence as Ofsted, the schools inspectorate in England have consistently been a core means to uphold the discriminatory ideology that there is a ‘correct’ or ‘proper’ way for teachers and children to speak in school.

when we start to see linguistic injustice as a design feature of schools and wider society, we can start to see ways to design it out.

no language or variety of language is ‘broken’ or ‘substandard’. but schools are designed to make children think that they are, and teachers are positioned to reinforce that ideology.

Today at the United Nations 🇺🇳 I raised my ongoing concerns on the exclusion and erasure of Black/Creole languages and the prosecution and policing of the use of Black Language critique words like “Coon/Coconut et al” and Rap music.
