Human mental health is complex, and cannot be adequately modelled in animals. This #MentalHealthAwarenessWeek, we're calling for researchers to use more human-relevant approaches. This review assesses models in psychiatric research 👇 frontiersin.org/journals/neuro…

This #DementiaActionWeek, we're questioning the clinical relevance of research into Alzheimer's disease that uses animals. The answer isn't approximating the disease in mice. It's investing in proper research using advanced methods and technologies and a human-specific focus.

The use of animals in medical research isn't just an ethical issue, it's a scientific one. In fact, non-animal research isn't just more humane, it's more effective too. Explore the arguments for humane research: humaneresearch.org.uk/the-argument-a…

2.7 million scientific procedures a year. The good news: Use of animals in science is decreasing 📉 But we want to see faster progress. That's why we're doing all we can to fund scientists to develop alternative ways to study human diseases.

Today, we're honouring #NationalAnimalRightsDay. ❤️ We believe that every animal deserves a life free from suffering. Since 1961, we've been at the forefront of developing alternatives to animal testing. We're working towards a future where no animals are used in research.

'Basic research - research into fundamental biological processes - is currently the largest area of animal use. But there's no regulation or guidelines requiring animal use in this area at all, meaning most animal experiments conducted are not legally required.

We love this campaign from Doctors Against Animal Experiments, which challenges the idea that patients should be grateful that animals are used to research their disease. 👏 The charity spoke with patients facing different conditions about their views on animal experiments.

Imagine if rollercoasters were safe in simulations but malfunctioned 95% of the time in real life. Wouldn't we just admit that the simulations don't effectively predict the safety of a ride, and stop using them? Yet, medicines face the same odds after animal trials.

A staggering 155k animals were caught in lab law breaches in 2023. Concerningly, this is a 864% increase from the year before. Proponents of animal testing say the welfare of animals is well-considered. But these breaches - and the lack of repercussions - say otherwise.
