Though you may not live on a stream, creek, or river, you’re always in a watershed. If you have a lawn, your lawn care and garden practices can help or harm local waters. Thanks to Cornell Cooperative Extension , New York State Dept. of Environmental Conservation , & Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association for the info!

Our #WildlifeWednesday feature this week is the #AmericanShad. An anadromous fish, shad are born in fresh water but live their lives in the ocean, only returning to the river of their birth to spawn. Young herring are found in the #HudsonRiver during summer and early fall.

#Stormwater collects pollution when moving over hard surfaces (roofs, sidewalks) & can impact local #waterquality. Mitigating stormwater pollution has two options - hard #greyinfrastructure (pipes + tanks), or #greeninfastructure which uses natural systems (soils, plants).

#greeninfastructure, which uses natural systems to filter, hold + slowly release stormwater using soil and plants also bring additional greening to communities, and can improve air + water quality, as well as local habitat.
