Check out our new paper in @nature nature.com/articles/s4158…. We report genetic mechanisms of neural tube defects in patients. Spina bifida is also known as meningomyelocele (MM). Prior family-based and association studies found few linked genes, so we took a different approach.

In this Review, Berna Sozen , Patrick Tam and Martin Pera summarize how recent studies of embryo models have advanced our understanding of cell state transitions of the pluripotent human epiblast and highlights some key remaining questions: doi.org/10.1242/dev.20…

Can metabolism regulate more than bioenergetics during human development? Our new study says YES! We show that metabolism influences cell fate choice in human naïve pluripotent stem cells, histone acetylation, and trophectoderm maturation. rb.gy/spqr9j Nature Cell Biology

Issue 8 is complete! Cover: In response to planar cell polarity-mediated cues, peripheral axons of type II spiral ganglion neurons make a ∼90° turn towards to the cochlear base (top). In Nectin3 knockout mice, some axons displayed turning errors (bottom) doi.org/10.1242/dev.20…
