I have just listened to this wonderful CD. Howells Elegy for Viola and String Orchestra is one of my favourites. Written in 1917, the climax in the first few minutes with the very high viola solo must be one of the most exquisite moments in the history of music.

Michael Irons Put a gun to my head (figuratively speaking, I rather hope you won't !) I'd perhaps nominate Herbert Howells as my absolute No.1 favourite composer; he's a quintessentially English weaver of spells, his memorably melodic music for me personally touches the heart like no other...
