22% of people in state prisons today were homeless/in transitional housing when they were arrested. The data is clear: One of this country’s leading responses to homelessness is incarceration.

THREAD. Predatory prison telecom Securus has just defaulted on over $1 BILLION in debt. After years of preying on incarcerated people and their families, driving many into debt, Securus can't pay its own. Here's the story about how advocacy made this happen.

It's so disappointing to see the governor choose to sign into law already failed drug & sentencing policies that will further harm communities & families. azcentral.com/story/news/pol…

Using public records laws, I've collected prison commissary lists from almost every state in the country. These lists reveal an exploitative, unregulated system that preys on incarcerated consumers. New from me + Ethan Corey for The Appeal. theappeal.org/locked-in-pric…

“The Appeal’s 9-month investigation uncovered prison commissaries’ exploitative, inconsistent systems with inside prices up to five times higher than in the community and markups as high as 600 percent.” theappeal.org/locked-in-pric… What’s that costing now mostly single family

In a new op-ed for Route Fifty, AV Executive Vice President of Criminal Justice Jennifer Doleac explains why "truth in sentencing" laws are counter-productive and how the possibility of parole can improve community safety. Read more here: route-fifty.com/management/202…

This seems like a good time to resurface this: The last letter Billy Wardlow sent me before his execution, thanking me for my reporting. I wish he could have seen the story about him & his D&D world get the recognition it did today from The Pulitzer Prizes.

There are 112 people on death row in AZ. Botched executions are a systemic problem, as is the death penalty. State sponsored executions shouldn’t be the norm, regardless of gov’t attempts to make it “safer.” S/o Jimmy Jenkins for his important reporting on CJ reform. Follow him!

No, I'm not following AZ Attorney General Kris Mayes in pushing executions! I didn't vote for a Dem AG or Governor Katie Hobbs to pursue the death penalty. But that's what's happening here. If AZ DEPT OF CORRECTIONS, REHABILITATION & REENTRY found a way to make drugs to kill people, it's with Hobbs' and Mayes' approval. Shame.

I can't imagine being a compounding pharmacist willing to knowingly compound drugs they know will be used to end the life of another human being. I can't imagine being a CA, doing everything she can to end another person's life. Mindboggling and very sad.

Suzanne I appreciate it, but we need real reporters covering this and other prison/jail issues. Got a media contact list? Let me know.

Arizona executed Frank Atwood 2 years ago. He had to help the lethal injection team find a vein. There's no evidence that we've gotten any better at capital punishment since then, but the Attorney General is preparing to resume executions next year.

Andy Hall (@jahndyhall) 's Twitter Profile Photo

This is not happening without the consent of Governor Katie Hobbs, who knows executions have nothing to do with community safety. I didn't vote for public policy based on vengeance.

Governor Katie Hobbs is a social worker by profession. Since when do social workers plan to have people killed? And why is the Governor covering up Judge Duncan's investigative report on the process of lethal injection? Go to Hobbs' website and email her to release the report.

I see a lot of people who think that the pair of ruby slippers that sold at auction last night were the same shoes owned by Smithsonian (they’re not!) or owned by the Academy Museum (they’re not!) or owned by any museum (they never were, but they were stolen from one!) A thread:
