In The 74, I caution school choice advocates not to over-rely on academic studies—even when the data is on our side. Evidence matters, but the strongest case for educational freedom is a moral one, rooted in parental authority, not technocratic validation.

This is right: Choice is essential regardless of test scores, attainment, or other technocratic measures. It is about the fundamental value of LIBERTY, especially in a plural society. the74million.org/article/eviden…

New episode with the excellent Matt Lee Matthew Lee from Kennesaw State. We talk about how families choose schools and how we might think about defining “success” in new school models. kennesaw.edu/coles/podcast/…

New working paper with Matthew Lee is out! MAJOR findings, worth the read. In a nutshell, homeschool families are not who you think they are. 35% of HS families also have a child in a public school! Compelling evidence of within-household sector mixing.

This might be surprising to some folks, but many homeschoolers are democrats. A recent survey by Angela R. Watson and Matthew Lee found that 29% of homeschooling parents identify as democrats and 25% are politically liberal. Overall, 43% identified as conservative. Well below
