"Iron def anemia "" is two diseases, iron def & anemia. Don't wait for the 2nd to treat both. One of the early signs is high RDW, not low MCV or HGB, on cbc. Iron is essential for ATP production & mitochondrial fx. Very basic concept but always forgotten esp for CC & cardiac pts

A 25y/M, T1DM, admitted in severe DKA, unconscious, K⁺ 2.0 &amp; diaphoretic.
Now biochemically out of DKA. 
O/E: skin thick &amp; dry with generalized blackened patches &amp; corse face,  hyperpigmentation, prominent bony protuberances.
