Shimura could've played this broadly - for pity or for laughs (or h*te) - but instead Kurosawa drew a mulilayered, nuanced, exquisite performance from him. #MadWed

Shimura portrays him as being incredibly weak & seriously flawed... but he does it SO well you can't hate him or pity him... the depth of portrayal is amazing. #MadWed
