A very large peranemid, the “dancing” motion is called the euglenid movement. The peranemid’s cell membrane is formed by hundreds of protein strips spiraling around the cell, and each strip can glide on the adjacent strips, allowing the organism to move like a belly dancer.

These Brown Hairstreak larvae are the first to be found by UV light in the region. Being able to find the early development stages of these butterflies in their natural habitat could really help us better understand predation levels & help conservation. Photos: Gillian Thompson
