In the lead up to the ceremonies at the flagstaff in Beaumont Hamel & the Craters on 13th Nov, we will post some pictures from our extensive archive. The first being from the German Archives of Beaumont Hamel before much of the destruction. #wewillrememberthem #ww1 #somme

Early picture of Beaumont Hamel starting to show signs of shelling. The church in the background is particularly damaged but most home are still standing at this point.

Significant damage to the church in Beaumont Hamel. Roof gone, side walls ruined shell damage just missing the beautiful artwork on the back wall…. How much longer before this wall would succumb to the same fate?

Through the German archives, we have finally managed to put a face to the name. Here is a picture of Lieutenant Georg Muller, the soldier who took the glass home and whose family returned it decades later. The church is in the background.
