Democracy Prep Civics Program: Yesterday marked the 55th anniversary of the signing of the Voting Rights Act. The law established nationwide voting rights protections, specifically by prohibiting racial discrimination in determining a person's eligibility to vote.

In 2013, the VRA was weakened significantly after the Shelby County v. Holder Supreme Court case limited the Federal government's ability to oversee changes in states' voting regulations. The decision left an opening for several states to...
