It has been really great to have Verity Walden here with us for a week teaching the CSCP and Medieval Latin course. I enjoyed taking our guest to English Heritage Hadrian's Wall - Corbridge Site and Chesters to look at Latin inscriptions.

A huge thank you to Vindolanda Trust for a fantastic evening yesterday evening! We got to hear Letty Stott and Dr Peter Holmes playing ancient instruments at Vindolanda.The bucina, the tuba and more were all heard in all of their glory. It was marvellous and mystical all at once!

I was out and about again today. Lovely plentiful rain this morning and then sun late morning. It is liberation day today in Italy. The day the allies freed Italy at the end of the Second World War. As such it is a public holiday. There was a big gathering in Vicenza main square.

I am starting to get my bearings re: Roman Vicenza. I have come here many, many times but not with 'Roman eyes'. The Piazza dei Signori is a good place to start to look for Roman Vicenza. Vicenza/Vicetia/Vincentia (meaning 'Victorious') became officially Roman in 157BC

We are making this short trip to Vicenza in honour of my father who died unexpectedly a year ago today. Cin cin papa! Here's to you kidda! Here's to the memory of you and all those special holidays we had together in Italy since we were molto giovani/giovane!!!! Ciao ciao!!

We are staying in Villa Valmarana Braga in the very centre of Vicenza just off the Corso Palladio. Francesca Braga, the owner of the Villa, explained to us how the Palladian Villa was restored by her father, Luigi Braga, in the 1960s + 1970s, after it had been bombed in WWII.
