The Fourth of July is about celebrating the big, bold, inclusive experiment that is our American democracy. And it has always been an experiment. Our democracy has never been guaranteed, which means we can’t take it for granted. We need to keep fighting for it, keep improving it,

There is absolutely no place for political violence in our democracy. Although we don’t yet know exactly what happened, we should all be relieved that former President Trump wasn’t seriously hurt, and use this moment to recommit ourselves to civility and respect in our politics.

I just realized it kinda feels like I’ve been in a 30+ year long serious relationship with my religion and I recently decided I just want to be friends.

The really great part is that the Da Vinci painting that forms Christians’ mental image of the last supper that they think was misrepresented in the Olympic ceremony is itself not an accurate depiction of the last supper but a symbolic reimagining.

DKiS History has shown that bigots are happy to use both science and religion to justify being assholes to others. The problem isn’t people choosing between religion or science, the problem is assholes.

For decades, conservative evangelical power brokers defined "truth" in terms of what advanced their idea of Truth--which neatly aligned w/ their own agenda. They founded institutions, organizations, publishers, & media platforms to advance, defend, and perpetuate this Truth. 🧵

a politician who helps feed thousands of children is far more like jesus than a politician that wants to make america a christian nation

The separation of church and state protects Christianity rather than threatens it. It protects Christianity from becoming corrupt by the allure of political power, wealth, and privilege, which causes it to abandon the gospel of Jesus. It protects Christianity from nationalism.

As a Christian, I can accept cognitive dissonance over matters of logic (e.g. "God is one and three"; "Jesus is human and divine"). But I can't accept cognitive dissonance with my most basic moral convictions (e.g. "God commanded mass killing of civilians including children").

Me: “Man, these Biden insults from the right are getting increasingly juvenile.” Biden campaign: owns the dark Brandon meme, fires back with their opponents’ own words. Me: “this is great!” DNC: “Hey, we should all try memes!” Me: “No that’s not, nonono, stop you’re too old.”

Something I love about Zen Buddhism is, contrary to my Eva background, it tends not to be overly verbose. There are plenty of writings, but the mentality is “words can help it click for you, but once it clicks you don’t need more words. You need to touch grass.”

The reason I don’t want a “Christian nation” isn’t because I’m a “secularist.” It’s because I have studied church history in depth and have seen the tremendous harm caused by the church crawling into bed with the empire. Separation of church and state is best for everyone.

If your church believes LGBTQ+ people should be discriminated against when it comes to membership, leadership, sacraments or anything else... just say that. Own it. Stop hiding behind "everyone is welcome" and be honest about your theology.

Declaring “Christ is king!” with your mouth while supporting tyrants with your actions so that they will crush all the people you think are your enemies is the epitome of using Jesus’ name in vain. The way of Jesus is compassion, not control.

Theory: One reason AI is so overused is the same reason most execs are a “type“. AI “reasoning” (do whatever moves toward the goal) is often exhibited by these people. The exec role selects for these types who see AI as universally applicable, because it’s worked for them.
