Christopher Painter’s Cardiff Festival Overture was his first orchestral commission, written whilst a masters student at Cardiff University School of Music. “The brief was to come up with a Waltonesque concert opener.” Premiered in Dec 1985 by the university orchestra & Michael Bell.
