Obesity is a major risk factor for diabetic peripheral neuropathy (DPN) in type 2 diabetes. This study investigated the effect of glucose lowering medication associated with weight change on DPN.

Their study found that people with type 2 diabetes on medications that cause weight gain had worse nerve damage and a greater loss of corneal nerves over time compared to those on weight loss medications.

As AI advances in the analysis of corneal nerve morphology, Ioannis N. Petropoulos et al., from Prof. Rayaz Malik's lab, showed that corneal confocal microscopy (CCM) can distinguish patterns of neurodegeneration in multiple sclerosis and epilepsy. Read more: pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/39671224/
