The first Greek Orthodox Bishop consecrated in America—Philaretos Ioannides (1885-1961). The Holy Synod of the Ecumenical Patriarchate elected him the first bishop of the Diocese of Chicago in 1923. He also served as locum tenens of the Diocese of San Francisco from 1923-1926.

Fr. Tom Fitzgerald was historian of the church who not only wrote history, but made it. A priest of the Ecumenical Patriarchate, pastor, and scholar, he was the longest serving Professor of Church History at Holy Cross Greek Orthodox School of Theology. May his memory be eternal.
