Has China’s sweeping education ban obliterated the private education sector? New Oriental CEO certainly thinks so, given he’s now selling farm produce online. I report. And Nigeria has Twitter again! #chinatechnews

After 10 ppl died in a fire in Urumqi due to their building being bolted shut for COVID, protestor across China took to the streets yesterday in a way I have never seen in China. Thousands in Shanghai; Peking university. Only now is it becoming BBC news… bbc.com/news/world-asi…

Last night Chinese social media was awash with footage of mass protests which have largely disappeared today. Some erased; another video is going viral instead. China had said it will continue to pursue Zero Covid, but if protests rage on, my guess is it will bend to pressure.

ā€œNo freedom, I’d rather dieā€. Protests continue across china into the night, this one is in southern China - the city of Chengdu, Sichuan province.

And this one in Wuhan. Almost all the major cities are in protest. Very different picture to early 2019 when people sang harmoniously across apartment blocks in the first ever COVID lockdown in Wuhan. Never seen anything like this in my lifetime.

I talk about women's visible part in the fast-spreading protests across China (and what a delight to see my former editor Claire Cohen on the show too!)

'I’ve never seen anything like this. We’ve heard about the Tiananmen Square protests...[but] this is on people’s doorsteps. It’s not just in squares, it’s everywhere.' Yuan Ren discussed how women are leading protests against Covid regulations in China. Catch upā¬‡ļø

Very worried. The sudden losening of restrictions across China without high vaccination rates (or much of a contingency plan) esp among the elderly means the shit is about to hit the fan – bad. Concerned for all grandparents. bloomberg.com/news/articles/…

This is my 85-yr-old grandad getting his 1st Covid jab. It was a long journey getting here, convincing relatives he needed it. You get to see the vaccine and make sure it’s the real deal beforehand. #KCONVAC, by Shenzhen Kantai Bio, choice for elderly given milder side effects

Ms Waters was the most caring and non-judgemental teacher I’ve ever had — that meant the world to a child transposed from Beijing to London in the 90s and still rode to school on the back of a bicycle. Oneword Ofsted grades to be scrapped bbc.com/news/articles/… branwen jeffreys

Oh and she was DEAD SMART and funny too. Defo wanted to be just like her when I grew up (and still do). I tried finding her many times but she’d changed to her married name. When I found her this year on Facebook, my joy was quickly tarnished by the awful news BBC Woman's Hour
