On this day in Texas history, in 1947, the SS Grandcamp, docked in Texas City, caught fire, which caused the ammonium nitrate it carried to explode, killing at least 576 and destroying the dock, Monsanto Chemical facilities, warehouses, and numerous oil & chemical storage tanks.
