Startups are the best way to make a real impact with research. But how do you get started? We’re hosting events at Edinburgh, Cambridge, Oxford, Manchester, Newcastle, and Warwick to dive into the scientist-to-founder journey and how deep tech companies get started. 👇

Very cool paper taking long genes encoding multidomain proteins from PKS clusters and breaking into smaller units for transcription/translation to give massive increase in productivity in heterologous expression hosts where mRNA was being truncated. nature.com/articles/s4146…

I have a PhD available via the YBDTP scheme looking at host glycan cross-feeding in the human gut microbiota. What networks does this underpin? What metabolites are produnced? and how would this ultimately impact the host (humans) #glycotime: From findaphd.com📷

Happy to have this deep dive into polysaccharide family 33 out: pnas.org/doi/10.1073/pn… We define features driving substrate specificity, catalytic mechanism, and evolutionary links with multiple lyases and epimerises #glycotime PNASNews

Alan Cartmell (@acartmell47) 's Twitter Profile Photo

PNASNews We show that the length of the catalytic tunnel determine substrate specificity; longer tunnels restrict activity to beta linked substrates whilst shorter tunnels allow activity on mix linked alpha and beta substrates. Some enzymes with very open tunnels are promiscuous.

Our NIH grant to discover coronavirus antiviral meds was terminated today. With this grant, we had developed a better SARSCoV2 inhibitor than Paxlovid, and we recently discovered an improved drug that looks better than Pfizer's own second-generation inhibitor.
