University of Bristol Dr Gareth Jones investigates how white blood cells, called T cells (coloured brown), cause joint damage in rheumatoid arthritis and how to prevent it. They collect in the joint and erode cartilage, which is a protective cushion on bone, the arrows show loss of red cartilage.

University of Bristol This green blob is a picture of Neutrophils, which are the most abundant immune cells in blood and they accumulate in a capillary at the site of an infection. Dr Borko Amulic and his lab investigates how these cells track down and destroy microbes, protecting us from infections.

University of Bristol Here are 3 white blood cells, called T cells, responding to a cancer cell. The 2nd image shows them use bright, tight structures to bind on tightly, but this can lead to the cancer cell killing them. Prof Christoph Wuelfing looks at how they could execute the job more effectively
