What is the energetic cost of being a right whale? Check out our new paper in Journal of Experimental Biology where we estimate the energy expenditure of southern right whales from their respiration rate and body condition loss journals.biologists.com/jeb/article-ab…

For our second Plastic Free July post, we are emphasizing the dangers of plastic pollution by highlighting an encounter with a spinner dolphin. This individual had a ring stuck around her rostrum. Read more in @_clacey s blog here: mmrphawaii.org/post/a-trash-d… (NOAA permit #21476)

We are excited to announce the master's thesis defense of Liah McPherson, next Wednesday at 11:00am HST. Liah will present findings from her research on the abundance and demographic parameters of spinner dolphins off Waiʻanae, Oʻahu.

🐬 Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology researchers can now determine the age-structure of free-ranging dolphin groups using drone photography - This method will aid in monitoring and conservation of dolphin species ➡️ bit.ly/3r2LGgh #UHMResearch

Massive congratulations to MMRPs Liah McPherson who has just successfully defended her MSc thesis on "the abundance and demographic parameters of spinner dolphins off Wai'anae, O'ahu". Our newly minted "Master of Dolphins" did an amazing job- we couldn't be more proud of her!

New paper today in The Royal Society Biology Letters: "Morphology of nares associated with stereo-olfaction in baleen whales". We argue that zooplanktivirous mysticetes may use scent to locate food, possibly putting them at increased risk of plastic ingestion doi.org/10.1098/rsbl.2…

Introducing MMRPʻs newest PhD, Dr Fabien Vivier !! Fabien did a wonderful job of defending his Doctoral dissertation today - we couldnʻt be more proud of him. Huge congratulations, Fabien!! Hawai‘i Institute of Marine Biology

What a first day at the Marine Mammalogy conference! #smm2024 Awesome presentations, great science, old and new friends, what else?
