Old lessons in programming: characters are not bytes. They are an abstraction. Sometimes that abstraction is based on numbers. Sometimes those numbers could fit as bytes. But characters are not bytes.

Always look for a third option. If presented with A or B, look for C or ask yourself "why not both?" The world is usually more complicated than we'd like to think and false dilemmas are all too easy to use or fall for.

This is an important point: identity control, paying member and "curated vip" are three different functions that often gets confused.
