'Explain what you mean by Woke & then we can have the conversation'. Incredibly put by Rakie Ayola💜 Still Menopausal. This should be the response to every commentator, Journalist & MP who've become far too comfortable throwing the Term 'Woke' into every one of their dog whistle opinions

On 7 November 1963 in Kingston(Jamaica), certain John Barnes was born. Outstanding player, #LFC legend and brilliant person, John had it all: he was quick, powerful, very skilled with the ball on his feet, brilliant goalscorer too. Happy birthday John Barnes! #LFChistory_net

We experience London as a Victorian city, but the Victorians themselves inhabited a still partly medieval and Tudor streetscape: this doesn’t really come across in TV/film adaptations

Today is the anniversary of the United Fruit Company massacre against striking workers on the Colombian Caribbean coast in 1928. Between 1000 and 2000 banana pickers were killed in a bloodbath. The company responsible is known today as 'Chiquita.'

I’m going to do a bit of embarrassing self-promotion. Sorry. During this most horrendous year, I pushed myself to finish my book and get it ready for publication - like planting bulbs in the pouring rain, it was really really hard, but I wanted something to live for in 2023.

So … author copies of the new book on the “Death Census”, which was taken in 1847 during the Irish Famine, have arrived. Looks well. Just to say, it will be out as an open access publication at the end of the month. Watch this space 👇 anthempress.com/regional-and-a…

What a surreal feeling to open a box filled with these first copies of my book, which is out in under a month. This took years of work, building trust and overcoming doubt at times. Mostly I hope I’ve done justice to the stories of the Rohingya who trusted me.

Henry McDonald was everything a journalist should be. Brimming with character, curiosity, talent & a commitment to truth-telling no matter who it upset. His breadth of knowledge was breathtaking. They don't make many like that nowadays. Taken far too soon. Rest in peace my friend

Some responses to that Biggar book I've read make a mistake by following his technique. This is to bog the reader down in the micro. But drawing up a 'moral balance' of colonialism, if that's a particularly worthwhile intellectual enterprise (it's not), must be a macro question.
