Reading our new books this morning in Hazel tree 😍📖

In year 1 we researched Dominican Republic 🇩🇴 inspired by the main character in our core text, Lola. We learnt new facts about their climate, wildlife, landcape and culture. We brainstormed and shared our findings with our friends.

Today it was Hazel trees turn to open number 10 on the advent calendar. We can’t wait to read all about Ernest Shackleton! 🚢

Today we used a range of manipulatives to count within 20.

Today we had a whole class debate about whether Billy in ‘Grandad’s Secret Giant’ was right to run away from the giant or not. We used sentence scaffolds to build our arguments, then we made a conscious corridor for Billy to walk through and consider both sides of the debate.

This week in Hazel Tree, some of us are reading Blackcurrant Jam. We learned how blackcurrants are grown and processed to become jam. We then had the chance to try some rich, tangy jam. It was sweet, delicious and some of us absolutely loved it!

This week in RHE we learnt the difference between acceptable and unacceptable physical contact. We understood that some types of physical contact such as hitting, pushing and hair pulling is unacceptable and if we do not like a type of physical contact we must say stop.

This week Year 1 visited Woolwich Library! They explored different types of books and picked their favourite to bring back to school📚

Year 1 had a blast during their ‘cool’ story and draw-along session, exploring the quirky story of *When Fish Finger Froze*. The children were fully engaged, bringing the story to life with their own imaginative illustrations! Scholastic

Hazel Tree browsed through the collection and picked out the perfect book to take home for World Book Day! 📚

This week, Year 1 enjoyed using balance scales to explore and compare the weight of various objects around the classroom. They were able to identify heavier and lighter items. ⚖️

To kick off the day, the team channeled their creativity and teamwork into constructing their very own rafts—purely for building purposes, of course! Following that, they dove into shelter building, putting their problem-solving and collaboration skills to the test.

This week in English Year 1 made inferences from the items found in a suitcase, thinking about who the items belong to and why.. 🧳

As the week winds down, the children reflect on a fun-filled adventure packed with exciting activities and unforgettable memories. For their final night, they gather around the crackling fire, sharing stories and laughter—warm mugs of hot chocolate in hand, what a perfect Morning

Excitement filled the school as exotic animals visited! From snakes to chinchillas and frogs, the children were thrilled to meet them up close. With curiosity and courage, they touched, observed and asked great questions - making animal classification come alive!
