The ringed plovers at Amble weren't successful with their first brood this year, but these tenacious birds have tried again and are incubating another full clutch! Nests can still be turning up in new places along our coastline, so remember to #watchyourstep and give them space.

Even when this male ringed plover's chicks have fledged he continues on sentry duty. They work tirelessly - warning of dangers, distracting predators and when the rain comes providing shelter under an outstretched wing. It's our privilege to see all of this unfold.

This year, our ringed plovers have already had six juveniles fledge safely, with another four chicks halfway there at Beadnell beach. We also have birds sitting on eggs at Lynemouth, Amble, and Newton beaches, so we're hoping for many more fluffballs in the next couple of weeks!

This week, 3 more ringed plover chicks successfully fledged from our nest protection site at Beadnell! Huge thank you to our amazing Coast Care North chick watch volunteers, and to members of the public for giving these birds the space they need to raise their young #nestprotection

Just a couple of beautiful turnstones in their summer plumage doing what turnstones do best - using their short bills to rummage through seaweed to find tasty invertebrates 🪳🪰#spaceforshorebirds #turnstone #northumberlandcoast

Look who's back! We've spotted purple sandpiper VX6 again, for the third winter in a row, at Stag Rocks near Bamburgh. He was ringed as a chick way up in the Arctic circle on Svalbard which makes it approximately 18000km that has covered on migration since he fledged in 2021.

Happy new year! The Northumberland coast is full of life even at the turn of the year. In flight turnstones show a bold pattern, but on the shore they are camouflaged to protect them from predators which can mean they can be overlooked. Please give Space for Shorebirds

Spring tides are here meaning space is limited for shorebirds and people. Check the tide table online before you head to the coast and remember that the coast path is a great option - safer and using it will avoid disturbance to shorebirds. #spaceforshorebirds

Golden plover usually feed inland at night, but during cold snaps like this, the fields they feed in will be frozen solid. Seeing them feeding on our beaches is a sign that they are very hungry, and this means we need to be extra careful to give them space to forage undisturbed.

The iridescent greens and purples that give lapwing their sheen make them one of the most beautiful birds on our coast. Soon, we will be able to watch the daring and agile tumbling courtship displays and hear the iconic and eponymous "Peewit" calls signalling the start of spring.

Easy to overlook on their own, Dunlin can form fantastic flocks of hundreds of birds, which are an awesome sight to see! Often found probing for food amongst the breaking waves, be sure to look out for them on your next visit to the coast and give them space to feed undisturbed!

We'll be sharing some #CuddyFacts with you throughout #EiderDuckDay2024 The first is that Eider are a true seaduck. They spend their whole life at the coast and are adapted to the conditions found there so are unlike the ducks you may see in the local park.

At busy times like Easter, it's hard for shorebirds to find a quiet spot to feed or rest. So if you're planning a trip to the beach this break, please be extra careful to give them the space they need to find their food in peace. Thanks from team S4S!
