This is great, LNCs are the workhorses of the BMA. They’re our local units taking on trusts. That said, I assume >90% of attendees here are Consultant/ SAS. Resident doctors are hugely underrepresented in the most important bodies (and conference) in the BMA. Time for change!

For years northern doctors haven’t had any mechanism to negotiate with our regional employer. Last night we voted for change. Today, I formally requested our recognition under trade union legislation. Doctors are organising to win better conditions. Nothing is off the table ✊

FAO: ALL doctors 1 day left to shape future of medical training Share views on: - recruitment/ numbers - quality/ barriers to education - flexibility & autonomy - supervisor capacity Etc Forgo this chance to change, we’ll be stuck with more of the same I’ve completed mine ✅

An ongoing absurdity - fully qualified GPs struggling for employment. This is happening right now in our region. I have a growing list of doctors who are currently facing unemployment *this August*. What on earth is going on NHS England?

NEW: Sure Start generated widespread, long-lasting benefits for children in education, health, absences, and SEND. Every £1 of up-front spending on Sure Start could generate around £2 in total benefits over the long run. THREAD on our new Nuffield Foundation-funded report: [1/11]

0.9% pay offer imposed. Separately, doctors in our region are facing a cut to their travel remuneration of £1m this August. Doctors will be £300/mo worse off. This offer is worth less than £100/mo. Vote YES in the ballot next week.

The report itself is odd. Bad takes on locally employed doctors and training bottlenecks. Then has clear data on average earning and professional comparators showing that doctors are behind and it either ignores them or picks other stats instead. Current board should resign 2/2

A reminder that this anti-trade union rhetoric comes from the IEA. That is the same right-wing fantastical lobby group that helped install Liz Truss. It also advocates for a non-NHS health system without free and universal access. Obviously, a highly credible organisation.

Too many doctors I represent are facing unemployment in 8 weeks time. Following our recent emergency BMA Northern Resident Doctors Committee meeting, I have written to every CMO/ MD and DME in our region. We’re calling on trusts to protect & support northern’s doctors through August’s crisis.

Huge news for our region. The Metro is coming to Washington. 🚊 We’ve secured £1.85bn transport funding for the North East and it is a game changer. I’m getting on with the job of delivering the world class transport network our region deserves and creating real opportunity.

Recycled arguments from when the pay campaigns started, it didn’t work then. There are always political choices, there is money for fair pay. Instead of trotting out DHSC lines, maybe the signatories should reflect over their own role in pay erosion and training bottlenecks?
