Fisheries Act
@fisheriesact
Canadian. Gutted. Hoping to have habitat protections back along with a little more oomph in monitoring and enforcement. Love science.

So great to see Joyce Murray's mandate letter include "the continued implementation of the modernized Fisheries Act". #cdnpoli pm.gc.ca/en/mandate-let…
“The more logging that happens, the less climate change it can withstand,” said @Jon_W_Moore, whose work focuses on aquatic ecosystems. “Reciprocally, the more watersheds are protected, the more climate change resilient they are.” #cdnpoli #bcpoli #salmon theglobeandmail.com/canada/british…
“We knew that the Alaskans were catching a lot of B.C. salmon, as they have for a long time, but it was pretty jarring to see how their share of the catch has grown as ours has dwindled to protect #salmon." via Delta Optimist delta-optimist.com/highlights/ala… #AKFisheries #BCFisheries
Great to hear Fisheries and Oceans moving forward with Ecological Significant Areas framework. An important conservation tool to help protect fish and fish habitat in unique, sensitive or highly productive habitat. #cdnpoli #salmon
One of the crucial gains in the Fisheries Act was around rebuilding, but with details to come in regulation. It's time to get these right Joyce Murray and help restore abundance in our oceans and prevent future stocks from entering the critical zone. Oceana Canada Fisheries and Oceans
Holy mackerel! A tough, but great decision by Minister Joyce Murray today to use her powers in the Fisheries Act to protect fish and ensure that Atlantic mackerel and Gulf herring get out of the critical zone and rebuild. #cdnpoli
In 2019 the new Fisheries Act restored lost protections & created new provisions requiring rebuilding plans for depleted fish stocks. The regulations out now outline the elements needed in plans & list 30 stocks, incl'g 16 in the critical zone. #cdnpoli oceana.ca/en/press-relea…
Oceans North is celebrating a new milestone in 🇨🇦’s approach to #fisheries management that could help bring depleted fish stocks back from the brink. Learn more: oceansnorth.org/en/blog/2022/0… Joyce Murray Fisheries and Oceans
Today we celebrate #WorldOceansDay! Great to see some implementation of the Fisheries Act with rebuilding regulations, #salmon funding and habitat restoration. Hope 2023 brings an end to open net fish farm permits on BC's coast, and ESA protections of estuaries & other. #cdnpoli
Important step today by Joyce Murray to protect wild #salmon - no renewal of fish farm permits in Discovery Islands, 2-yrs renewal with more conditions elsewhere on BC's coast, transition plan to end open net fin fish aquaculture to be drafted soon and complete in 2023. #cdnpoli
#DeepSeaMining is one of those incredibly stupid ideas. We have #mining disasters on land (Mount Polley, Brumadinho, etc,etc), and really need to keep mining companies out of our oceans (from mining & dumping). Joyce Murray needs to support Palau & others with moratorium #cdnpoli
Great to see federal and provincial collaboration to work with communities and Indigenous governments to improve #wildsalmon habitat continue Joyce Murray Josie Osborne 🇨🇦
Great to hear Steven Guilbeault Joyce Murray Jonathan Wilkinson 🇨🇦 today at #IMPAC5 effectively announcing a moratorium on deep sea mining in Canadian waters. Hope to see on-going leadership result in a global moratorium in the coming months. #cdnpoli #mining canada.ca/en/natural-res…
