After 20 years working in natural history #museums, I still get surprised with things like, "Oh look, there's a box of #penguins". 📦🐧🐧

Here is a link to 239 consensus genome sequences, assembled by 👾 Karthik, from sequencing reads of 2.3.4.4b H5N1 influenza A virus from cattle and other species. github.com/andersen-lab/a…

This is really interesting, if true; multiple origins of a "species" via parallel speciation from the same paraphyletic ancestor! eurekalert.org/news-releases/… and original article - academic.oup.com/evolut/advance…

Nice article Los Angeles Times about the work by Elliot Jackson and others in the lab! And yes it’s true we still use a hand crank centrifuge in the room with our fancy scopes. latimes.com/science/story/…

Devastated by the loss of our magnificent Pangur this week as he lost his short and courageous battle with lymphoma. I am grateful to have shared 8 years of life with him, and trust he is on to bigger and better things in the next iteration of his existence, whatever that may be.

Now that I have keys+office, I guess I can share that I have officially begun my role as Curator of Mammals Denver Museum. I am honored to join this institution and could not be more thrilled to be part of such an innovative and forward-thinking group of people (and specimens).

My student Griffin just sent me this profoundly sad photo of a Great Bowerbird bower. The painting on the right depicts what the bower should look like, filled with pebbles, shells, and bones. Nowadays, the birds use what they can most easily find in their surroundings: garbage.

Check out our new perspective on the interplay between viral evolution and immune memory, and how consideration of these factors has grown increasingly critical in light of globalization and anthropogenic activity.
