Even if a borrower meets all his loan payments regularly, the interest charges are now usually so high that he ends up paying far more for the item than the listed cost. That is like throwing away good money.

True, not going into debt may mean not buying some of the nice things you desire. But is that not better than taking on burdens that can easily result in greater troubles?

Lowering one’s desires, avoiding the snare of materialism, surely makes sense in view of today’s high prices and unsettled economic conditions.

As long as the “me first” and “now” mentality remains it is unlikely that the future will be any better.

Among the greatest gifts parents can give to their children are unconditional love and a set of values that the parents live by and do not just lecture about.

Without proper values, life is little more than a crude struggle for survival. Values give meaning to life. They establish priorities. They set moral boundaries and define rules of behavior.

The parades and demonstrations of the modern May Day began in North America. Why there? The industrial revolution brought new machines that ran continuously, with the result that factory owners often expected their employees to work up to 16 hours every day except Sundays.

In an effort to improve the lives of workers, a federation of trade and labor unions in the United States and Canada called for an eight-hour workday beginning on May 1, 1886.

For the most part, employers refused to grant this, so on the first of May, thousands of workers went on strike.

The Haymarket Riot in Chicago, Illinois, gave the labor movement in the United States its first martyrs, and workers in England, France, Holland, Italy, Russia, and Spain rallied in support.

In 1889 a congress of world Socialist parties meeting in Paris declared that May 1, 1890, would be a day of international demonstrations in favor of an eight-hour workday.The date thereafter became an annual occasion on which to raise workers’demands for better working condition

In republics of the Soviet Union, May Day was traditionally celebrated with military parades and displays of technological achievements. Today many countries observe a holiday called Labor Day or International Workers’ Day on the first of May.

What was once frowned on and prohibited by radio and television broadcasters and censors - obscene language and pornographic scenes and gestures is now commonplace in many countries, cloaked by the right of freedom of speech.

When someone says, “I do not agree with what you say, but I will defend your right to say it,” are you given carte blanche, (unlimited freedom) to say publicly whatever you wish, regardless of the consequences? Seems there are those who think so.
